Start with the adopted code and the design criteria
The applicable code is the starting point—not a substitute for project-specific review.
Louisiana’s published construction-code summary currently lists the 2021 IBC and IRC, with the 2024 ICC editions scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027. Confirm the effective edition, amendments and permit timing for the project. [1]
For Mississippi projects, confirm the governing jurisdiction and project type directly. State Fire Marshal adoption does not establish a single residential code edition for every municipality or county. [2]
Obtain the design team’s requirements before treating a proposed system as an accepted solution. Include structural loads, opening protection, energy criteria and any project-specific acceptance standards.
Compare documented assemblies—not broad material claims
The AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 standard, commonly called NAFS, provides a framework for evaluating covered fenestration products. Specify the applicable edition and designation required for the project. [3]
Request the documents for the actual proposed configuration:
- Manufacturer and product series.
- Opening type and proposed dimensions.
- Applicable performance designation and pressure values.
- Glass and reinforcement configuration.
- Mulled-assembly details and limits.
- Attachment details and supporting conditions.
- Applicable energy and impact documentation.

Thermally broken aluminum for contemporary coastal architecture
Thermally broken aluminum belongs in the conversation when the design calls for a refined metal profile and substantial glazed openings.
Assess the available sightlines against the proposed size, glass makeup and operating type. A narrow profile is an architectural objective; it is not proof of adequate structural capacity.
Likewise, a thermal break is a feature to evaluate within the complete system. Review the actual thermal data rather than assigning a generic performance level to every aluminum product.
Mullion integrity must be resolved as part of the assembly
A rated individual unit does not automatically qualify the combination shown on the elevation.
Identify the proposed mull condition early. Obtain applicable manufacturer documentation and any required engineering for the combination, its attachment and its supporting structure. Coordinate responsibility for unresolved details before release.
The approved configuration should be traceable from the elevation and opening schedule to the final order. Field changes should go back through the appropriate review process.
Clad wood for architecture that values interior character
Aluminum-clad wood offers a different design expression: a wood interior coordinated with the home’s finishes and millwork.
Compare available species, profiles, grille arrangements and hardware alongside documented performance. Carry the same rigor through large fixed units, operable windows and adjacent door systems.
Specify the coastal care requirements and the installation details. A premium finish should be supported by a practical maintenance plan.
Evaluate non-impact options when the project permits them
When an accepted non-impact configuration meets the complete specification, it can be a valid alternate to evaluate. Compare actual glass makeup, panel weights, hardware requirements and total package cost.
Do not assume that every non-impact option is lighter, less expensive or structurally superior. Do not delete an impact requirement to preserve a sightline or budget target. Record the accepted protection approach in the project documents.
Connect the specification to procurement
A technically suitable package still needs an executable release plan.
Coordinate the latest drawing revision, outstanding selections, approval status and delivery assumptions. Identify long-lead choices while alternatives can still be reviewed. Request current manufacturer information before committing dependent work to a date.
Ask about project and volume pricing based on the complete schedule. Compare alternatives on equivalent scope and documented performance.
