Low-E is a category, not one identical glass package. For South Louisiana, the solar heat gain coefficient helps describe how much solar heat passes through the glass. Compare the actual NFRC-rated whole-window values for the exact size and configuration being quoted.
Compare the complete window
Glass matters, but so do frame construction, weatherstripping, meeting rails, drainage, installation conditions and air leakage. A strong glass package cannot correct a poorly matched opening or incomplete installation plan.
Vinyl, clad wood and aluminum
Vinyl can offer low maintenance and strong value. Aluminum-clad wood can support a warmer interior appearance and architectural details. Aluminum products may suit particular design and coastal needs. The best choice depends on the home, opening sizes, desired appearance and budget.
Northshore exposure and comfort
Discuss sun exposure, wind-driven rain, shaded versus unshaded elevations and rooms that are difficult to cool. Large west-facing glass may need different consideration from a smaller shaded opening.
