The project budget guide

What determines the price of windows and doors?

A useful quote begins with the actual openings and the work included. Two prices can look very different because the product specifications or installation scope are different.

Use this guide to organize your project before comparing proposals. For pricing specific to your home, send Kyle your city, approximate quantity and photos or plans.

Understand the moving parts

Six details that shape your budget.

1. Quantity, size and configuration

Count each opening and identify fixed versus operating windows, single versus double doors, sidelites and transoms. Large or custom configurations need product-specific pricing.

2. Material and product line

Compare the actual series and configuration. A vinyl replacement window, a clad-wood window and a decorative steel entry are different products with different options.

3. Glass and performance

Identify privacy, appearance and documented project requirements. Compare the quoted glass package and assembly; a broad description such as “energy efficient” is not a complete specification.

4. Colors, finishes and details

Exterior colors, interior finishes, grille patterns, hardware and specialty shapes can change the selection and price. Ask which options are included.

5. Installation and existing conditions

Product pricing is separate from installation. Ask the installer to identify removal, disposal, trim, painting, water-management details and any allowance for hidden damage.

6. Delivery, tax and schedule

Confirm applicable tax, delivery charges, payment terms, current lead time and who handles receiving and storage. Compare complete totals with the same scope.
